Our son has seen Dr Spencer for over 8 years starting at the NICU due to extreme prematurity (1lb-12oz, 15 wks early). She helped to diagnose a very serious condition among preemies, which left untreated would have led to retinal detachment and blindness. She later prescribed our son with his first set of glasses at just over a year old, and later still helped treat and overcome lazy eye. She is thorough and patient and great with kids. Medical services have always been covered by insurance including refraction eye exams for the infant/toddler years. We fill eyeglass prescriptions off-site for lower cost. Her office is busy and wait times can be extended, but we wouldn't trade her skill and expertise away for less time in a waiting room.
This clinic is a NON VSP PROVIDER which mean you will be paying full price for a basic eye exam and retail price for your eye glasses. If you use a VSP Provider your exam will be free and you will get a discounted price on you glasses, additionally there are many to choose from in West Des Moines.
We had to show up to three years worth of appointments before they would treat my son's crossed eye. Finally they determined that glasses would help him after I told them his occupational therapist wants answers and if they won't help us, they will give us a referral. They finally admit he needs glasses but the glasses store there would not sell as classes. She made it very clear that we should just go home and see who is in-network. Instead of doing the people test he needed, she put on her coat and left. We are getting the runaround left and right so I called them to figure out what we can do. Is that on hold for over 5 minutes to speak with a manager and instead of talking to her, the glasses lady comes back on and says she won't help me unless I give her the $220 for their overpriced glasses. I would not recommend this place to anyone at this point. It is clear to me they are not trying to help my child which saddens my heart.
