We go here semi-regularly. I would normally give 5 stars but my wife is not a big eater and there are no small meals offered. Also we are from NYC and enjoy a good cup of coffee. Here, as in most places we go in Iowa, the coffee is weaker than we like. Thus the 4 stars.
We were very pleased with our stop at Jimmy's egg. Food was prepared very well and served in a nice bright room. Everything was tasty and had that good old Cafe type feel. They also have several unique items, like the delicious breakfast Burger I had since it was getting close to lunchtime. The portions were huge so don't let your eyes get ahead of your stomach. This was one of the better breakfast locations we have been to on the west side of Des Moines and we will be back.
Service is good and the staff is friendly. Prices are reasonable and the food is excellent. Portions are large, while not great for my wife are good for me.
We put our order in - I got the breakfast burger, home fries and a good glass of tomato juice; my girlfriend got an omelet, fresh fruit and pancakes. When the food was brought out - they gave me french fries instead of home fries and the egg on my burger was over done, and my girlfriend's fruit cup was hard as a rock. They did bring me out an order of home fries and apologized for the mistake.
My girlfriend and I decided we'd try Jimmy's Egg for the first time today...and unfortunately, it'll be our last. We got in the door - and were told there would be a 10 minute wait (which is fine because they were busy), after being seated - it took over 10 minutes to be acknowledged and to be offered any type of drinks. Finally a server asked if we had been helped - after saying we hadn't she took our table.
Enjoying my free Veterans Day breakfast here at Jimmy's Egg. Unlike other places the selection is not limited or "while supplies last".
Overall, we left disappointed and by hearing some of the other customers, they were too.
As we were waiting to be helped and our food - the servers/kitchen were a complete mess. It seemed like an episode of "who's on first". Lots of tempers flaring and the overall establishment was a mess. Food on the floor, tables not being cleaned - just a mess of sorts.
We waited maybe 10 minutes on a Saturday am around 9:30. The staff were very friendly and attentive. My wife's 3 egg, bacon, cheese omlet was a little dry but still good. The breakfast potatoes and mini stack were good. My 2 eggs, bacon, sausage patties ( these have a little bit of bite) were good. The sides of hash browns with onions and peppers were okay, while the biscuits and gravy were the perfect amount. Plenty of food for the cost.
Great Food. Big portions. Like the sides. More options than local chain restaurant's. Can't wait to go back. Biscuit's really fresh and soft. Fast turnover on tables. Went on Sunday morning and waited 15 minutes
